An exhibition in Piacenza dedicated to Antonio Ligabue painter and sculptor

The Biffi Arte Gallery in Piacenza is hosting from February 14 to April 28, 2019 the exhibition Antonio Ligabue. Painter and Sculptor.

From February 14 to April 28, 2019, the Biffi Arte Gallery in Piacenza offers an exhibition dedicated to Antonio Ligabue, entitled Antonio Ligabue. Painter and Sculptor.

On display will be 82 works, including 59 paintings and 23 bronze sculptures, in an excursus that will highlight all three main periods into which Ligabue’s artistic production has been divided: from the domestic animals of the first period(Mountain Pasture) to the tigers with wide-open jaws,(Head of Tiger) to the attacking felines(Black Widow; Leopard mauling a monkey), to the snakes, to the birds of prey seizing prey or struggling for survival(Fox with Bird of Prey) of the second and third periods: a jungle that the artist imagines with hallucinated fantasy among the Po River woods. It is especially in the self-portraits(Self-portrait with redscarf ; Self-portrait with fly) that Ligabue paints his own existential pain, shouting it with the urgency of an intense and feral sensibility.Plastic activity is also present with a core of intense sculptures pulled in bronze from the terracotta originals or the one in beeswax such as the Horse in Love. Generally Ligabue usedclay from his beloved Po, which he chewed for a long time to make it ductile and create extraordinary groups of felines, such as Animals in Struggle and Lion and Lioness or numerous horses and domestic animals.

The exhibition is intended to draw attention to Ligabue the sculptor, as the phase of collecting documentation and relationship with the owners of these types of works and graphics is being concluded, and in collaboration with Marzio Dall’Acqua, Ligabue’s graphic work (drawings, pastels, etchings) and sculptures are being catalogued. This cataloguing follows the edition TUTTO LIGABUE. Catalogo Ragionato dei Dipinti published in 2005 by Augusto Agosta Tota Editore, in two tomes, which, completing a long journey, made it possible to document about 900 paintings out of an estimated production of 1050/1100 paintings.

The exhibition is curated by Augusto Agosta Tota.
