An immersive journey into Tutankhamun's Tomb at the Medici Riccardi Palace

Palazzo Medici Riccardi is offering the immersive journey Tutankhamun: Journey to Eternity from February 15 to June 2, 2020.

The Galleria delle Carrozze at Palazzo Medici Riccardi is hosting the exhibition event Tutankamon: Journey to Eternity, curated by Maria Cristina Guidotti and Pasquale Barile, under the patronage of the Metropolitan City of Florence and the Municipality of Florence, in collaboration with MUS.E, from February 15 to June 2, 2020.

It is afully immersive experience that will lead visitors to discover the secrets of Tutankhamun’s Tomb and its treasures, thanks to faithful reproductions from Cairo, original artifacts made available by the National Archaeological Museum of Florence, some of which have never been seen before, 3D technology and innovative Virtual Reality.

The Tomb of Tutankhamun, discovered on Nov. 4, 1922, by archaeologist Howard Carter, is the only example of a royal burial with trousseau found intact: it is thanks to it that we now know how a pharaoh’s burial took place and what kind of trousseau accompanied it.

Present reproductions of canopic jars, the statue of Anubis, the golden throne and the golden mask that protected the mummy’s face and shoulders will make it possible to reconstruct the tomb. Previously unseen artifacts will also be on view, including the painted wooden sarcophagus of Padihorpakhered, restored on the occasion of the exhibition: a precious find, from the storerooms of the Egyptian section of the National Archaeological Museum in Florence, which has retained its pictorial decorations on all its surfaces.

Thanks to careful 3D reconstruction work and virtual reality, the public will be able to visit one of the world’s most famous attractions just by wearing a visor and holding two controllers. It will be possible to dwell on the individual objects in the trousseau, grasping them and listening to an in-depth study related to them. But that’s not all: Carter’s words from the pages of his diaries will echo in the environment, and in the burial chamber one will have the opportunity to decipher hieroglyphics, thanks to the translation work by Pasquale Barile.

The event has already been presented in the United States, Central and South America and several European capitals, as well as in major Italian cities in a two-year tour: now it comes to Florence to bring everyone closer to the fascination of Egyptian culture.
