Animals in art arrive in Brescia: a zoo from the Renaissance to the 18th century for the first time in Europe

After hosting more than 200,000 people in the last four years of major exhibitions, theFriends of Palazzo Martinengo Association will celebrate its fifth year of activity with an exhibition, curated by Davide Dotti, that is surprising and unique, dedicated to the representation of our animal friends in Italian Renaissance and Baroque painting: it is entitled Animals in Art. From the Renaissance to Ceruti (we had given you some previews here, with images). For the first time ever at the European level, thanks to the selection of a hundred works of the highest quality from prestigious Italian and foreign museums, picture galleries and private collections, it will be possible to bring to life a real “artistic zoo,” which will allow the public to understand how the animal has always played a fundamental role in the history of art.

By virtue of its cultural, artistic and scientific relevance, the exhibition has obtained the prestigious patronage of WWF Italy, the collaboration with which will allow for an in-depth study during the visit of some particularly important issues such as the preservation of the environment, protected species and biodiversity, the culture of sustainability against the waste of resources, respect for ecosystems and the fight against poaching.

Thanks to the collaboration with the Department of Natural Sciences and Zoology of the University of Pisa, which will scientifically analyze the works selected for the exhibition, valuable information on breeds and their evolution over the centuries will also be obtained.

Passing through the halls of Palazzo Martinengo, the public will take a journey through three centuries of art history, admiring masterpieces by the great masters of painting who, with unparalleled aesthetic sensitivity, painted animals of all species, paying great attention to the definition of the anatomical characteristics of the individual breeds, capturing even the most subtle character nuances. A relationship, that between humans and animals, which the most celebrated artists of all time have eternalized in paintings of enchanting beauty, and which this amazing exhibition aims to rediscover and bring to the attention of contemporary society.

Animals in Art from the Renaissance to Ceruti will be held from January 19 to June 9. For all information you can call +39 327 3339846, email info@amicimartinengo.it or visit amicimartinengo.it.
