Art treasures at the time of Giotto on display in Gubbio

The city of Gubbio is hosting the exhibition Gubbio at the Time of Giotto - Art Treasures in the Land of Oderisi in three exhibition venues.

Three exhibition venues to discover in Gubbio the art treasures in the land of Oderisi at the time of Giotto: in fact, the Palazzo dei Consoli, the Diocesan Museum and the Palazzo Ducale in Gubbio will host from July 7 to November 4, 2018 the exhibition"Gubbio at the time of Giotto. Art Treasures in the Land of Oderisi.“The exhibition, reads the presentation, ”is set up in three different locations, because there are immovable works, but also because there are places rich in meaning and imbued with beauty: the Palazzo dei Consoli, which stands above a fabulous terrace that makes it resemble those cities that the saints take to heaven in altar polyptychs; the Museo Diocesano, which stands next to the cathedral church; and finally the Palazzo Ducale, which began as the seat of the Comune and ended up being the residence of Federico da Montefeltro, lord of Urbino. Along this path one will be able to tread the footprints of the men and women of that ancient time, to see from the same perspective and understand with the same taste a civic and religious art together."

The intent of the exhibition is to restore the image of a medium-sized but politically and culturally important city in the period between the late 13th century and the first decades of the 14th century.

Paintings that have long remained hidden from the scene of art history have been restored for the occasion. Panel paintings, sculptures, goldwork, and illuminated manuscripts presenting the artistic activity of such greats as Guido di Oderisi, or the Master of the Franciscan Crosses, the Master of the Cross of Gubbio, Palmerino di Guido, Mello da Gubbio, and the Master of Figline will be on view to the public.

The exhibition is curated by Giordana Benazzi, Elvio Lunghi and Enrica Neri Lusanna and is sponsored by the Municipality of Gubbio, the Polo Museale dell’Umbria, the Soprintendenza Archeologia, Belle Arti e Paesaggio dell’Umbria, the Eugubina Church and the Region of Umbria.

An audio guide to the exhibition is available at the Ducal Palace exhibition venue.
