From May 17 to June 21, 2025 Palazzo Bentivoglio in Bologna presents Odio il decoro! Piero Fornasetti, a project curated by Davide Trabucco that focuses on the creative universe of the famous Milanese designer. On display are plates, trays, boxes and furnishing accessories made during Fornasetti’s long career, proposed through a reflection on the relationship between object and context. The project comes to life starting with the Stame-Lantieri collection preserved at Palazzo Bentivoglio, which becomes the focus of a new visual narrative. The installation, entitled Summary of previous installments, was designed by architect Ferruccio Laviani and is developed in the basement of the palace, redesigned for the occasion.
Through Trabucco’s vision, the exhibition aims to explore how context changes the meaning of an object, particularly when it is a work of art. Piero Fornasetti, already the protagonist of a previous garage BENTIVOGLIO event, is now welcomed in a new space of the palace with an exhibition that questions the value and perception of art objects. The selection of works, from the palace’s private collection, becomes a tool to examine the transformation of the meaning and value attributed to artifacts depending on the environment in which they are placed. The exhibition is based on an elementary observation: a plate observed in the domestic setting takes on a different meaning than when it is displayed in a shop window, under the distracted gaze of passersby, or within a museum exhibition. The return of the object to its original location thus occurs laden with new layers of meaning, enriched by an experience involving confrontation with the other and change of context. I hate decorum! Piero Fornasetti recounts the artist’s irrepressible impulse to decorate any available surface, regardless of hierarchies or preferences. The exhibition highlights Fornasetti’s unstoppable creativity, capable of peacefully invading any object, with a focus on everyday objects. In the context of capitalist production, where production efficiency tends to reduce processing time to a minimum, Fornasetti chooses different paths. His style represents an overcoming of fashions, projecting toward an idea of decoration that ideally still extends to surfaces that are still virgin. In this new project, the interior collection directly confronts Fornasetti’s ability to give new life to objects through the decorative gesture.
I hate decorum! Piero Fornasetti will be on view from May 17 to June 21, 2025 at Palazzo Bentivoglio, Via del Borgo di San Pietro 1, Bologna. The exhibition will be open Wednesday through Saturday, 12 noon to 7 p.m., with free admission. More information is available at the official website www.palazzobentivoglio.org.
