Borghese Gallery celebrates the art of Gian Lorenzo Bernini

From November 1, 2017 to February 4, 2018, the Borghese Gallery will host a major exhibition dedicated to the production of Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the reopening of the Borghese Gallery, the famous Roman museum will host a major exhibition dedicated to Gian Lorenzo Bernini from November 1, 2017 to February 4, 2018.
The exhibition promises to be a continuation of the critical discourse launched in 1998 in the Borghese Gallery with the exhibition “Bernini Sculptor: the Birth of the Baroque in the House of Borghese.”

It is no coincidence that the exhibition was chosen to be held here, since the Gallery is the museum that holds the artist’s most important and spectacular works in marble.
Therefore, the guiding thread of the exhibition will be the Galleria Borghese as the privileged scene of Bernini’s sculptures, made for his patrons: first Cardinal Scipione, then Pope Urban VIII Barberini.

Ample space will be given to his marble sculptures, although in the exhibition a series of thematic insights devoted to his painting, putti, terracotta , and the making of a work from drawing will acquaint visitors with all aspects related to the great artist’s production.

The exhibition will be divided into eight sections: apprenticeship with Peter, youth and birth of a genre, putti, bourgeois groups, restoration of the antique, busts, painting, Bernini and Louis XIV, the craft du sculptor, sketches, as well as the wonderful Saint Bibiana restored for the exhibition. Each section is entrusted to specialists who have been dealing with particular aspects of his artistic activity for many years, such as Andrea Bacchi, Maria Giulia Barberini, Anna Coliva, Anne-Lise Desmas, Luigi Ficacci, and Stefano Pierguidi.

The exhibition is curated by Andrea Bacchi and Anna Coliva and is promoted by Galleria Borghese in collaboration with Intesa Sanpaolo and Fendi.
