At the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche, eight photographers interpret Giancarlo De Carlo's lesson in Urbino

Through Oct. 24, 2021, the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche is hosting the exhibition Spirits - Eight Photographers Tell Giancarlo De Carlo in Urbino, curated by Jonathan Pierini, Director ISIA Istituto Superiore per le Industrie Artistiche di Urbino, and Marco Pierini, Acting Director of the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche.

The work of architect Giancarlo De Carlo in Urbino, particularly his last phase, is narrated by eight internationally renowned photographers, ISIA professors: Paola Binante, Luca Capuano, Mario Cresci, Paola De Pietri, Jason Fulfors, Stefano Graziani, Armin Linke and Giovanna Silva interpret through photography De Carlo’s lesson that a place is a space "experienced, consumed, perpetually transformed by human presence. On display, then, is a collection of images that narrate the architect’s Urbino work in the present day.

Their gazes are complemented by the performative work of graphic designer Patrick Lacey and artist Ben Cain with ISIA students and narratives elaborated by students from the Iuav University of Venice together with Armin Linke from archival photographic material.

For architect Gianni Filindeu, who created the layout, and graphic designers Leonardo Sonnoli and Irene Bacchi, ISIA faculty members, working on this exhibition provided an opportunity to participate in the illustrious dialogue between De Carlo and the architects of the Palazzo Ducale, namely Luciano Laurana and Francesco Di Giorgio Martini. In the introduction to the 1985 volume Il Palazzo di Federico da Montefeltro, De Carlo speaks of them as the spirits of the Palazzo.

A selection of publications edited by Sara Marini and Alberto Petracchin highlights the theoretical contribution of Decarlian project-thinking, an indispensable component of his legacy.

The exhibition has the patronage of the University of Urbino Carlo Bo, the Iuav University of Venice, and the Ca’ Romanino-Urbino Foundation.
