Online booking through http://prenotazionemusei.comune.fe.it is recommended.

The exhibition Gaetano Previati. Between Symbolism and Futurism, which celebrates the centenary of the artist’s death.

On display for the occasion are more than sixty works, including oils, pastels and drawings, about thirty-five of which come from Ferrara’s civic collections, and the others from public and private collections. Unpublished documents will also be present.

The aim of the exhibition is to emphasize in Previati’s production a constant tension toward overcoming the traditional limits of easel painting. In fact, the artist proposes an experimental approach to the subjects and mechanisms of vision, renewing Italian art towards the end of the 19th century: he is fascinated by a painting that expresses feelings, which materializes in large-scale works.

Among the works on display are a sketch of the historically themed painting The Hostages of Crema, The Opium Smokers and Cleopatra, In the Meadow, which marks the turning point with his adherence to Divisionism, Ligurian Hills, and The Pacific Railroad from the Ways of Trade cycle created between 1914 and 1916.

The exhibition is curated by Chiara Vorrasi and organized by Fondazione Ferrara Arte and the Gallerie d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea.
