Florence, a major Donatello exhibition in 2022 at Palazzo Strozzi

Announced for 2022 a major exhibition on Donatello to be held at two venues, Palazzo Strozzi and the Bargello National Museum.

A major exhibition on Donatello: Running from March 19, 2022 to July 31, 2022, the exhibition Donatello. The Renaissance in the Halls of Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, curated by Francesco Caglioti and organized in collaboration with the Bargello Museums. The Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi presents it as a “historic and unrepeatable exhibition,” which aims to reconstruct the extraordinary journey of one of the most important and influential masters of Italian art of all time, Donatello (Donato de’ Bardi; Florence, 1386 - 1466), who will be compared with masterpieces by artists such as Brunelleschi, Masaccio, Andrea Mantegna, Giovanni Bellini, Raphael and Michelangelo.

The scheme will be the same as the major exhibition on Verrocchio in 2019, that is, the exhibition will be spread over two venues: precisely, Palazzo Strozzi and the Museo Nazionale del Bargello. “The project,” reads the anticipations released with a note, “was born as a celebration of Donatello in dialogue with museums, collections and institutions in Florence and throughout Italy as well as through fundamental international collaborations, aiming to broaden the reflection on this master in time and space, in materials, techniques and genres, and to finally embrace the dimensions of Donatello’s universe.”

The exhibition also has the collaboration of the Skulpturensammlung und Museum für Byzantinische Kunst of the State Museums in Berlin and the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. It is not yet known which works will be on display: for now, however, it is known that there will be the Madonna Pazzi from the Staatliche Museen in Berlin. And there will be no shortage, of course, of Donatello’s works preserved at the Bargello National Museum: the two Davids, the one in marble and the other in bronze, the Saint George, the Marzocco, the Dancing Putto, theAttis, and the relief of the Crucifixion that was on display this year at the Castello Sforzesco in Milan for Il Corpo e l’Anima, da Donatello a Michelangelo. Italian Renaissance Sculpture. There will, of course, be no shortage of important international loans.
