The Salone dei Duecento in Florence's Palazzo Vecchio is once again home to the tapestries, owned by the Presidency of the Republic and the Uffizi Galleries, dedicated to the Stories of Joseph and woven to designs by three of the greatest artists of the 16th century.

From June 2 to Nov. 29, 2023, the Salone dei Duecento of Palazzo Vecchio in Florence will once again host the series of tapestries, owned by the Presidency of the Republic and the Uffizi Galleries, dedicated to the Stories of Joseph and commissioned by Duke Cosimo I de’ Medici and woven between 1545 and 1553 to designs by three of the greatest artists of the time, Agnolo Bronzino, Jacopo Pontormo and Francesco Salviati.

On the occasion of the exhibition The Return of Joseph, Prince of Dreams, the eight tapestries not yet on display will rotate in groups of four in the city’s ancient council chamber, which still hosts the sessions of the city assembly.

From June 2 to August 30, the fourth cycle of tapestries will be on view with the following scenes: Joseph’s Cup Found in Benjamin’s Sack, drawing and cartoon by Agnolo Bronzino, weaving by Nicolas Karcher (1550-1553, 579 x 506, Rome, Presidency of the Republic); Joseph Restrains Benjamin, drawing and cartoon by Pontormo, weaving by Jan Rost (1546-1547, 567 x 269 cm, Rome, Presidency of the Republic); Joseph makes himself known to his brothers and dismisses the Egyptians, drawing and cartoon by Agnolo Bronzino, weaving by Nicolas Karcher (1550-1553, 557 x 283 cm, Florence, Uffizi Galleries); Joseph forgives his brothers, drawing and cartoon by Agnolo Bronzino, weaving by Nicolas Karcher (1550-1553, 573 x 457 cm, Florence, Uffizi Galleries).

With the fourth cycle unmounted, from Sept. 1 to Nov. 29 it will be the turn of the other four tapestries: Joseph’s Meeting with Jacob in Egypt, drawing and cartoon by Agnolo, weaving by Nicolas Karcher (1550-1553, 568 x 457 cm, Florence, Uffizi Galleries); Pharaoh Accepts Jacob into the Kingdom, drawing and cartoon by Agnolo Bronzino, weaving by Jan Rost (1553, 574 x 424 cm, Rome, Presidency of the Republic); Jacob blesses the sons of Joseph, drawing and cartoon by Agnolo Bronzino, weaving by Nicolas Karcher (1550-1553, 580 x 468 cm, Florence, Uffizi Galleries); Burial of Jacob, drawing and cartoon by Agnolo Bronzino, weaving by Jan Rost (1553, 581 x 280 cm, Rome, Presidency of the Republic).

Open to the public Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and a single admission fee of 3 euros (free admission for Palazzo Vecchio valid).
