From Feb. 1 to March 31, 2019, the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna is hosting the exhibition Gasometro M.A.N. No. 3, a project with which photographer Carlo Valsecchi (Bologna, 1965) reinterprets the city’s industrial history. There is an unbreakable bond between Bologna and its towers, connecting elements between past, present and future that enclose and tell the city’s history, becoming its symbol and representation. In addition to the medieval towers, another giant stands out in the city skyline, towering between Porta San Donato and Porta Mascarella: the M.A.N. Gasometer No. 3, a structure about 50 meters high with a diameter of 27 meters, built in 1927 and used until 1984 to store gas used in the city.

Carlo Valsecchi photographed it with the gaze of someone who considers buildings a living thing: not ghosts or inert archaeological testimonies of an industrial past, but organisms in continuous transformation. The sixteen photographic images on display at the Pinacotecaraccountsome phases of the recent process of restoration and reclamation of the Gasometer, describing it as if it were a body in the midst of metamorphosis, bringing to our attention with new eyes what we already think we know but have never really dwelt on.

Project and exhibition are promoted by Hera S.p.A in collaboration with Polo Museale dell’Emilia Romagna - Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna. The exhibition, with free admission, is set up in the Salone degli Incamminati and can be visited during museum opening hours: Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
