From June 27 to September 19, 2026, the Teresiana Library in Mantua will host Giorgio Milani ’s ( Piacenza, 1946) first solo exhibition in the city, titled *Babele*. The opening is scheduled for June 26 at 6:00 p.m. The exhibition is sponsored by the City of Mantua and the Teresiana Library and curated by Francesca Ferrari, Massimo Ferrari, and Claudia Tinazzi. The exhibition brings together 70 works, including paintings and sculptures, from the artist’s most representative series, such as Torri di Gutenberg, Babeli, Poetari, and Sindoni.
The exhibition offers an interpretation of Milani’s work within a framework that intertwines sculpture, graphic art, and conceptual reflection. The artist’s work unfolds through a layering of signs, letters, and real and imaginary alphabets, constructed as complex visual systems akin to archives of memory. From this perspective, the reference to Babel takes on an interpretive significance linked to the multiplicity of languages and cultures, as well as to the complexity of contemporary communication processes. The exhibition project connects these thematic nuclei with the historical function of the library as a place for the preservation and transmission of written knowledge. The choice of venue is set within the context of the Biblioteca Teresiana in Mantua, which is characterized by a particularly significant historical heritage.
The exhibition also ties into the city’s cultural calendar through its connection to the European Day of Jewish Culture, scheduled for September 6, 2026, and the Mantua Literature Festival, taking place from September 9 to 13, 2026. The initiative is thus part of a network of events involving various artistic and literary forms. The exhibition is curated by Massimo Ferrari and Claudia Tinazzi, in collaboration with Annalucia D’Erchia and Daniela Mori of the Politecnico di Milano, Mantua Campus, ABC Department. The catalog, published by LetteraVentidue, includes contributions from the curators and an essay by art critic Alberto Fiz, as well as a selection of texts dedicated to the work of Giorgio Milani.
