"Henri Matisse. On the Scene of Art": this is the exhibition that the Fortress of Bard will host from July 7 to October 14, 2018.
An exhibition focused on Matisse and his relationship with theater and his works related to dramaturgy.
More than 90 works divided into four major sections: Stage Costumes, Matisse and His Models, Odalisques, and Jazz. The artist’s strong interest in Oriental-influenced decorativism will also be presented through carpets, clothing, and goldsmithing objects on loan from the Matisse family.
The artist began making stage costumes and sets in 1919 for the ballet “Song of the Nightingale,” an experience that would be repeated in 1939 for the ballet “Rouge et Noir.”
He also began collecting clothes for his models, taking an interest in high fashion; among his models was his assistant Lydia Delectorskaya.
In the early 1940s Matisse developed the technique of papiers décupés: Jazz, a series of 40 works made using this technique, stands out.
