I was born in a cloud reopens exhibition season at Marguerite Arp Foundation in Locarno

On Sunday, April 17, the Marguerite Arp Foundation reopens to the public with a new exhibition season. It begins with an exhibition dedicated to the cloud.

The Marguerite Arp Foundation in Locarno-Solduno reopens its doors to the public with a new exhibition season on April 17, 2022.

It begins with I Was Born in a Cloud, which can be visited from April 17 to October 30, 2022 and is curated by Simona Martinoli.

“I was born in a cloud,” wrote Jean Arp (Strasbourg, 1886 - Basel, 1966) in the poemStrassburgkonfiguration (Strassburg Configuration, 1932), one of several texts dedicated to the theme of the cloud. While in earlier eras the cloud served as a background for landscape painting, in the twentieth century it gained autonomy thanks to artists such as Arp, Calder, Magritte, or Oppenheim. For Arp, it is a central theme, a constantly changing and evolving entity.

From poetry to artwork, the cloud is one of the true protagonists of Arp’s work. It ideally lends itself to taking many forms while at the same time proving capable of evoking the most diverse associations. Thus are born sculptures, reliefs and prints entitled Coupe de nuage, Tranches de nuage or Palette de nuages.

One section of the exhibition is reserved for the cloud as a metaphor for life, Arp’s life marked by the presence of his two wives, Sophie Taeuber-Arp and Marguerite Arp-Hagenbach. In a year when we commemorate the 100th anniversary of Jean and Sophie’s marriage and the 120th anniversary of the birth of the creator of the Foundation, the coexistence of a set of mutual tributes reveals the deep connection between these three extraordinary personalities who marked the history of 20th-century art and collecting.

Among the artists in the exhibition are Jean Arp, Sophie Taeuber-Arp, Alexander Calder, Marcel Jean, Frederick Kiesler, and Hans Richter.

During the exhibition season, an ephemeral art installation designed by Nicola Colombo and Monica Sciarini of Studio Nephos can be seen in the terraced part of the garden. Clouds of natural mist form the scenic coulisse and common thread of this year’s events. If in the exhibition hall the movement of the clouds is captured in artworks and poetic texts, the ephemeral is favored outside.

The Marguerite Arp Foundation was created in 1988 by Marguerite Arp-Hagenbach, Jean Arp’s widow. It is housed in the artist’s home-atelier and holds much of Jean and Marguerite Arp’s collection, as well as an archive and library, and is the center for the study of the work of Jean Arp and Sophie Taeuber-Arp.
