In 2023 at the National Gallery in London, the first major exhibition dedicated to St. Francis in the UK

In 2023, the National Gallery in London will present the first major exhibition in the UK dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi, through masterpieces ranging from the 13th century to the present.

The National Gallery in London announces for 2023 the first major exhibition in the United Kingdom dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi. In fact, it will be held from May 6 to July 30 next year in the rooms on the ground floor. The exhibition aims to present the figure of the saint and his iconography through works ranging from the 13th century to the present: from early medieval works, relics and manuscripts to modern films and a Marvel comic book.

The exhibition aims to give an understanding of how the saint close to the poor and nature has been represented over the centuries and how he has been a source of inspiration for so many artists, as well as how his figure has transcended generations, continents and different religious traditions.

Curated by Gabriele Finaldi, director of the National Gallery, and Joost Joustra, Ahmanson Research Associate Curator in Art and Religion at the National Gallery, the exhibition will bring together paintings from the National Gallery Collection by Sassetta, Botticelli and Zurbarán along with international loans including works by Caravaggio, Josefa de Óbidos, Stanley Spencer, Antony Gormley, Giuseppe Penone, Andrea Büttner and a new work by Richard Long.

The exhibition is supported by Howard and Roberta Ahmanson and The Vaseppi Trust.
