In Haarlem the most important exhibition of Leonardo da Vinci drawings ever held in the Netherlands

Leonardo da Vinci's drawings arrive in Haarlem for the largest exhibition of his drawings ever held in the Netherlands. October 5, 2018 through January 6, 2019.

TheNetherlands will also celebrate the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci ( Vinci, 1452 - Amboise, 1519): the Teylers Museum in Haarlem, in fact, will put on display thirty-three drawings by the artist on loan from other museums such as the Royal Collection in Windsor, the Uffizi, the Louvre, the Albertina in Vienna, the Royal Library of Turin (from which comes a study of a Head and Shoulders of a Young Woman), and the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest (the Teylers does not own any of Leonardo’s works). This is the first major exhibition of Leonardo’s drawings to be held in the Netherlands.

On display from October 5, 2018 to January 6, 2019, among these drawings will be three of the five preliminary studies of the disciples of The Last Supper that decorates the wall of the refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan. And since the original, for obvious reasons, cannot be moved, a life-size replica (4.6 x 8.8 meters) will be displayed along with the replica of The Last Supper from the Belgian abbey of Tongerlo.

“A must-see exhibition,” reads the Teylers Museum presentation, “will focus on portraits. In the 15th century, Leonardo was one of the first artists to address the expressions and emotions of painted characters. The Mona Lisa’s enigmatic smile is the most powerful example. His almost scientific search for the means to translate emotions is the main theme of his notes and drawings on display at the Teylers Museum. With his expert eye, Leonardo observed countless heads and faces in the streets, capturing them with quick drawings made with silver point or pencil lines in notebooks. Leonardo looked for contrasts: the ugly old man and the beautiful young woman with wild curls. The museum will also show works by his many followers in a separate room, making it easier to see how far ahead of his time Leonardo was.”
