In Pistoia a major exhibition on Michelangelo Pistoletto with all major works

From June 25 to Sept. 25, Pistoia is hosting the exhibition 'Pistoletto Pistoia,' dedicated to Michelangelo Pistoletto, at various venues: displaying the artist's most famous and important works, from Venus of Rags to the Third Paradise.

In 1994 Michelangelo Pistoletto chose Pistoia to present Progetto Arte, a utopian project that later found its realization in Biella with Cittadellarte. And today almost thirty years later, on the occasion of his eighty-ninth birthday, the great Piedmontese artist returns to the Tuscan city for the opening of the exhibition Pistoletto Pistoia. Constellation: 5 Steps Between Creation and Memory, an exhibition produced by Pistoia Musei in collaboration with Fondazione Pistoletto Cittadellarte, which will inhabit buildings and public places in the city from June 25 to September 25, 2022.

That between Pistoletto and Pistoia is an enduring bond, celebrated by the artist’s choice to collaborate with the young museum network of Pistoia Musei, which is considered fertile ground for activating thoughtful and purposeful artistic action, a constellation exhibition capable of triggering processes of social change, creating unprecedented connections, and recovering the historic relationship between the city and the surrounding area. The exhibition includes some of his most iconic works - such as Venus of Rags, Love Difference - Mediterranean Sea, Time of Judgment (Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Judaism), Third Paradise, Door Sign Art, Newspaper Sphere - alongside others created specifically for the exhibition, all set up in buildings of historical and identity value in the city, from the Ancient Palace of Bishops to the Church of San Leone, the Fabroniana Library to Palazzo Fabroni, and the Astronomical Observatory of the Pistoia Mountains.

The project intends to present itself as a constellation exhibition and, by conveying actions throughout the city and its territory, aims to point the way to a redefinition of the urban and social fabric. A path further highlighted by the performance that the artist will make on Thursday, June 23, on the occasion of the opening, when he will roll the Sphere of Newspapers from the Ancient Palace of the Bishops passing through the Church of San Leone and the Fabroniana Library to Palazzo Fabroni, a building that in 1994 hosted his exhibition The Doors of Palazzo Fabroni and that will host the work for the duration of the exhibition.

Pistoletto Pistoia. Constellation: 5 Steps Between Creation and Memory also expands beyond the city’s borders: in addition to the works exhibited at theAstronomical Observatory of the Pistoia Mountains, the project includes the creation of a Third Paradise in the Valdinievole territory, near the natural oasis of the Padule di Fucecchio. On this occasion, the collective work will be made according to the ancient art of we aving - weaving marsh grasses and telling stories, stitching together memories - by Intrecci Onlus, an association based in Castelmartini whose members will be coordinated by Saverio Teruzzi for Cittadellarte and Alessio Bertini for Pistoia Musei. The work, which the community donates to itself, is meant to strengthen the identity of the area and be a reminder to future generations to forge alliances of peace. The exhibition is a project of Pistoia Musei in collaboration with Fondazione Pistoletto Cittadellarte and curated by Monica Preti, director of Pistoia Musei.
