From Nov. 25, 2022 to April 10, 2023, the Salone degli Incanti in Trieste will host "The Great Banksy Exhibition," an unauthorized journey through the works of the British street artist with about 60 works in three sections.

From November 25, 2022 to April 10, 2023, the Salone degli Incanti in Trieste will host The Great Banksy Exhibition - BANKSY, THE GREAT COMMUNICATOR - Unauthorized exhibition, dedicated to Banksy, one of the most famous and mysterious artists of our time. The exhibition is curated by Gianni Mercurio, promoted by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region and the Municipality of Trieste and organized by PromoTurismoFVG in collaboration with Madeinart.

Almost nothing is known about his private life and identity, and this is what makes Banksy a fascinating and controversial artist; his art is based on anonymity, invisibility and his ability to convey messages through graffiti. In fact, each of his works is meant to convey a specific message, and there are many recurring themes in his art: protests against the injustices of the world, denunciation of war and violence, messages of hope and freedom, conformity, migration, and much more. He is certainly a skilled communicator who chooses to express himself as quietly as possible, letting his graffiti speak for him. His art is born on the walls, with the aim of being spread on the web and making inroads into the hearts of everyone, especially young people.

What matters to the artist is therefore not the form, but the message, which is transmitted first and more than others through various levels of communication and through a unique and immediately recognizable style. Here, in addition to the red thread of visual protest, which is so dear to the artist, another disruptive concept thus emerges: his ability to communicate and uniquely use the communication channels of his time, from social media to real live performances, to tell the story of his art. From this element develops the need for this exhibition.

How to forget, for example, the iconic Little Girl with the Red Balloon? The little girl watches her balloon fly away, and we cannot but think of this image as a clear cry for freedom and hope. All this is surrounded by the halo of mystery and surprise that revolves around this work: during its sale at an auction, the print partially self-destructed, leaving only the balloon intact. In short, even then the artist found a way to leave everyone in suspense and to emphasize, once again, his ideal of hope and freedom.

The exhibition hosts about sixty works made with different techniques and will be divided into topics: 1. RADICALS: In this part of the exhibition, the public will find the artistic movements to which Banksy explicitly refers and from which he draws inspiration, either by modes of expression or elective affinities. These movements are Situationism and the French May on the one hand, and Graffitism and hip hop culture in New York on the other. BANKSY AND HIS WORKS: a journey through reproductions and original works by the artist 3. ALL OVER: Through a multimedia installation, the artist’s murals will be presented in their original locations, a fundamental aspect of his art. Also featured will be images of his forays from museums around the world (MOMA, Louvre, Tate, etc.) and some of his typical and provocative exhibitions, as well as a highly valuable collection of posters and videos.
