In Venice, Rachel Lee Hovnanian presents her mute angels in an immersive installation

Centro Studi e Documentazione della Cultura Armena a Venezia is hosting, as a collateral event of the Biennale, Rachel Lee Hovnanian's immersive installation, Angels Listening.

From April 23 to November 27, 2022, the Study and Documentation Center of Armenian Culture will host Rachel Lee Hovnanian’s immersive installation entitled Angels Listening, a collateral event of the 59th International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia. Curated by Annalisa Bugliani, the exhibition features seven large angels, cast in bronze, their mouths taped shut, surrounding a golden confessional. The installation then invites the audience to write their innermost thoughts, repressed by fear of judgment, on a piece of tape. The viewer’s voice joins the chorus of confessions offered by the visitors, showing the feeling of liberation associated with catharsis.

AngelsListening intends to offer itself as a meditative spacein which to reflect on issues related to identity, knowledge, time, and also interpersonal relationships. The angels are placed around the Cathartic Box, where visitors will place their thoughts. The installation presents seven angels, as seven are the days of the week and the fundamental units of measurement; seven bright stars form the constellations of the Big Dipper and Ursa Minor; seven are the virtues, musical notes and deadly sins. And again, seven is the number of the hills of Rome.

“The way we perceive the world and connect with others today has profoundly changed due to the pandemic and political and cultural systems,” said the artist."Angels Listening offers a space that transforms hundreds of silent voices into a chorus of confessions, showing the liberation associated with catharsis and the sanctity of meditative environments in moments of shared isolation."

Hours: Tuesday through Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Free admission.
