Ivrea dedicates an exhibition to Gabriele D'annunzio with works by Nicola Bolla and Andrea Chisesi inspired by him

From January 21 to March 12, 2023 Ivrea Italian Book Capital dedicates an exhibition to Gabriele D'Annunzio, on the centenary of the Vittoriale's donation to the Italian state. On display are works by Nicola Bolla and Andrea Chisesi inspired by him.

From Jan. 21 to March 12, 2023, Ivrea Italian Book Capital will present the exhibition Vate, Vanitas, Vittoria, inspired by the figure of Gabriele D’Annunzio and created on the occasion of the centenary of the Vittoriale’s donation to the Italian state. The opening will open on Saturday, January 21 at 5 p.m. with a lectio magistralis by Giordano Bruno Guerri, historian and president of the Fondazione Il Vittoriale degli Italiani; Angelo Piero Cappello, scholar of D’Annunzio and director of Cepell - Centro per il libro e la lettura del Ministero della Cultura, will also speak.

Curated by Costanza Casali, the exhibition at Palazzo Giusiana will display works by Nicola Bolla and Andrea Chisesi that are inspired by the figure of the Vate, Gabriele D’Annunzio. Andrea Chisesi has created a series of works all dedicated to the Vate, while Nicola Bolla, known for his Vanitas, made of Swarovski and playing cards, juxtaposes these very themes with the famous author.

“For this second part of Ivrea Capital of the Book we wanted to dedicate a tribute to Gabriele D’Annunzio, precisely in the year that marks the centenary of the Vittoriale’s donation to the Italian state,” said the curator. "The exhibition interprets his figure in a non-didactic way, drawing inspiration from three terms strongly related to him summarized in the title of the exhibition Vate, Vanitas, Vittoria. Andrea Chisesi and Nicola Bolla’s works depart from traditional techniques and offer a different viewpoint on D’Annunzio: if Chisesi uses ’fusion’ by intervening with photography after painting the canvas, Bolla uses unusual materials for sculpture such as crystals and playing cards that fully express the ephemeral. Chisesi’s works dedicated to the Vate reveal frames of D’Annunzio’s life. Bolla’s Vanitas are a memento mori, and Victory is represented by the Nike of Samothrace reinterpreted by Chisesi and by lowered crystal flags created by Bolla, which are symbolic of an ephemeral victory that represents only a moment and a passage that tomorrow could turn into defeat."

Hours: Thursday and Friday from 3 to 6 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 6 p.m.
