Jim Dine, a leading figure in American art, is on display in Rome at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni

In Rome, the Palazzo delle Esposizioni dedicates an exhibition to one of the major protagonists of American art, Jim Dine (Cincinnati, 1935).

The same artist, whose work has had a great impact on contemporary visual culture, particularly on the Italian visual culture of the 1960s, has created the exhibition curated by Daniela Lancioni by displaying more than 60 works, dated from 1959 to 2016, from public and private, European and American collections. An exhaustive iconographic apparatus restores the visual memory of the famous happenings, narrated in the exhibition by the voice of Jim Dine himself, and a selection of video interviews, allows to familiarize with the figure of the artist.

An important core of the exhibition consists of the works that Jim Dine donated in 2017 to the Musée national d’art moderne - Centre George Pompidou in Paris and that the French institution generously made available for this occasion. Conspicuous are the loans of historical works from European collections, private and public, including the Museo di Ca’ Pesaro Venice and MART, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto (both of these museums are lending works from the Sonnabend collection), the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebaek in Denmark, and the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein in Vaduz. A selection of works comes from the United States, including the two celebrated 1960s paintings A Black Shovel. Number 2 (1962) and Long Island Landscape (1963), from the collections of the Whitney Museum in New York. Also from American collections come Shoe from 1961 and The Studio (Landscape Painting) from 1963, both presented by the artist at the 1964 Venice Biennale.

It is difficult to categorize Jim Dine and his works because of his desire for independence and his refusal to identify himself in the categories of criticism, art history and the market. The autonomy and freedom with which he has always related to the landscape of established values are exemplary. This is demonstrated by his biographical events and his works tenaciously adherent to lived experiences, “uneducated” and “disturbing,” as they have sometimes been called.

The exhibition opens from Feb. 11 to June 2, 2020.
