Kim Bartelt at Cadogan Gallery in Milan: new works suspended between perception and memory

From March 11 to April 8, 2026, Cadogan Gallery in Milan hosts Der Himmel über Berlin, the solo exhibition of Berlin-based artist Kim Bartelt. The new body of work explores transitions between suspended spaces and instants, between materiality and memory, with a delicate and geometric visual language.

From March 11 to April 8, 2026, the Milan spaces of Cadogan Gallery will host Berlin-based artist Kim Bartelt’s solo exhibition Der Himmel über Berlin. The new body of work continues a path begun with the previous exhibition Zwischen Tür und Angel, deepening the reflection on the sense of transition between spaces and suspended instants. Bartelt’s research focuses on threshold conditions in which perception, memory and materiality remain in tension, inviting the viewer to confront moments of vulnerability and impermanence.

The works are characterized by the application of sheets of tissue paper on canvas, forming geometric blocks. Semi-transparent paper, a recurring element in the artist’s work, takes on a metaphorical function here: it represents the transience and fragility of lived experience, suggesting a reflection on time and the evanescence of everyday moments. The artist draws inspiration from the hues and atmosphere of the urban skyline, observable from the window of his studio. The viewer is thus immersed in a threshold dimension, where the materiality of the supports and the delicacy of color merge with the emotional component of the work.

In parallel, a group of works by Texas-based Terrell James will be on view in the gallery’s SOLO spaces from March 3 to April 8, 2026. The painter interprets the natural world through an abstract lens, suggesting the origins of forms in plants, animals, fossils and glaciers. James’ new works feature defined forms that create an internal rhythm to the compositions and generate a sense of lyrical movement, marking a new phase in her artistic practice.

Notes about the artist

Kim Bartelt, a Berliner, completed her fine arts training at Parsons School of Design in New York. After a period devoted to painting sets for advertising campaigns, she began collecting discarded sheets of paper in sets gradually incorporating them into her own artistic research. The result was essential and surprisingly light collages, whose delicate translucence gives the works a quality that transcends mere materiality.
