Barche et navili. From June 29 to September 8, 2019, the Maritime Museum in Cesenatico will host an exhibition presenting Leonardo da Vinci's naval studies to the public.

On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death, the Maritime Museum in Cesenatico is hosting from June 29 to September 8, 2019 the exhibition Barche et navili. Images, Ideas and Naval Writings of Leonardo da Vinci, curated by Marco Bonino, maritime historian and former professor of ancient naval architecture at the University of Bologna.

The exhibition aims to present to the public the studies in the naval field of the Tuscan genius, through drawings and studies of boats, ships and their equipment. Starting with depictions of ships in 15th-century art and the late medieval tradition, the exhibition will be accompanied by Leonardo’s studies in this field. Significant are those on the maneuvering of the lateen sail and the shape of hulls in relation to wave and vortex formation. Da Vinci was also involved in military engineering with inventions of assault craft, such as a cavity hull, a fast galley with a spur, an armored cover for assault boats and underwater weapons, and innovations such as theapplication of artillery

In thesummer of 1502, Leonardo visited Cesenatico to check on the state of its harbor, built in the early fourteenth century; he noted in his Codex L that he was “at porto cesenatico a di 6 di settembre 1502 a ore 15” and a bird’s-eye view from above of the fortress with surrounding buildings and a survey dimensioned in plan of the canal port are evidence of his passage through the city.

Even today Cesenatico’s main monument is the Leonardesque Canal Port, the axis of the city’s daily life.

The exhibition is organized by the Maritime Museum under the patronage of theCultural Heritage Institute of the Emilia-Romagna Region and ISTIAEN (Italian Institute of Naval Archaeology and Ethnology).
