London's National Gallery announces major Dürer exhibition for 2021

The National Gallery in London will host a major exhibition on Albrecht Dürer's travels in Europe in spring 2021.

The National Gallery in London has announced for spring 2021 (March 6 to June 13) the first major exhibition in the United Kingdom in two decades devoted to the German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer.

Dürer’s Journeys: Travels of a Renaissance Artist, this is the title of the exhibition, will present about one hundred of the artist’s works, including some never before exhibited in the UK, such as paintings, drawings, engravings, and letters, to give visitors an understanding of how much Dürer traveled across Europe and how his travels influenced his output.

In particular, it was his encounters with the Italian and Dutch artists of his contemporaries during his stays in the Alps, Italy and the Netherlands that were instrumental in increasing his fame in Europe. Chronicles of the painter’s travels to the Alps and Italy (mid-1590s), Venice (1505-1507) and the Netherlands (1520-1521) will be featured for the first time.

The exhibition will count loans from museums and private collections around the world and will bring the Madonna and Child from the National Gallery of Art, Washington, to the United Kingdom for the first time.

The exhibition is organized by the National Gallery in London in collaboration with the Suermondt-Ludwig Museum in Aachen (it is in fact celebrating the 500th anniversary of the artist’s trip to Aachen made in 1520-1521), under the sponsorship of Credit Suisse.
