On the occasion of the 700th anniversary of Marco Polo’s death, January 8, 1324, we intend to enhance and revive his extraordinary adventure on the “Silk Road” through a selection of costumes that represent the journey of the great Venetian merchant and traveler who already at the age of seventeen found himself with his father and uncle plying the seas, crossing boundless deserts and visiting legendary cities, encountering powerful but also dangerous warriors from very different countries and cultures, as we have come to know through the great RAI production that saw international co-partnerships including China itself.
The exhibition Marco Polo. Sabbatini’s costumes will therefore be a tribute to director Giuliano Montaldo, costume designer Enrico Sabbatini and composer Ennio Morricone in order to also highlight these extraordinary Italian geniuses who have passed away. Specifically, the exhibition bears witness to the abilities of Stefano Nicolao, who was involved in the production directly by the great costume designer Sabbatini, to work in the Himalayan mountain range to create scenes and costumes of the transition from Persia to China. This initiative, therefore, features some 30 costumes documenting the route of Marco Polo’s journey from Venice to China, accompanied by original sketches, the result of four years of study and preparation for the film, and set photos.
