Mudec dedicates a solo exhibition to Robert Capa on the 110th anniversary of the famous photojournalist's birth

Milan's Spazio Mudec Photo pays tribute with the solo exhibition "Robert Capa. In History" the famous Hungarian photojournalist on the occasion of the 110th anniversary of his birth. On display are more than 80 photographic prints.

On the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the birth of Robert Capa (Budapest, 1913 - Thai Binh, 1954), Spazio Mudec Photo in Milan pays tribute to the great Hungarian photographer with the solo exhibition Robert Capa. In History, which traces the main war and travel reportages that Capa made during his 20-year career, which coincided with crucial moments in the history of the 20th century.

On view from November 11, 2022 to March 19, 2023, curated by Sara Rizzo, curator at Mudec, promoted by the Municipality of Milan - Culture and produced by 24 ORE Cultura in collaboration with Magnum Photos, the exhibition brings together a substantial and significant body of photographs: more than eighty photographic prints, some of which have never before been shown in an Italian exhibition, accompanied by a rare interview given by the photojournalist to an American radio station in 1947 and some period documents from Magnum’s collection.

Through seven sections and with a diachronic path, the most important black-and-white reportages made by Robert Capa are narrated, from his beginnings in Berlin and Paris (1932-1936) to the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939); from the Japanese invasion of China (1938) to World War II (1941-1945); from the travel reportage in the Soviet Union (1947) to that on the birth of Israel (1948-1950), up to his last assignment as a war photographer in Indochina (1954).

The Mudec exhibition aims to serve as an opener of the celebrations for the 110th anniversary of the famous photojournalist’s birth: it tells the History of the Twentieth Century through his black-and-white portraits and his war and travel reportages. The lens of his camera made the world aware not only of the horrors and miseries of the many armed conflicts that characterized the last century and the faces of the men and women who made History, but also of everyday life.

Also on display are unpublished shots of the reportage in the Soviet Union taken by the founder of Magnum with John Steinbeck in 1947.
