Mutabilia: installation in Rome that reflects on the changing character of the city and the concept of eternity

Rome's Sala Santa Rita presents through Aug. 29 Mutabilia, a multichannel installation intended to reflect on the concept of eternity and the changing character of the urbe.

Until Aug. 29, Rome ’s Sala Santa Rita is hosting Mutabilia, the fourth of the twelve winning projects of the Sala Santa Rita 2021 Call for Selection, promoted by ROMA Culture and entrusted for management to Azienda Speciale Palaexpo, as part of its mission as a hub of contemporary art and culture.

This is an unprecedented experiment that returns Sala Santa Rita to the city, transforming it into an observatory through which to approach different works of art, all designed in close relationship with the place that hosts them, and expressions of contemporary creativity. The exhibition project, curated by Edoardo Tedone, consists of amulti-channel installation and aims to reflect on the concept of eternity and the changing and precarious character of Rome and the urbe in a broader sense, showing the displacement of the former church of Santa Rita that took place in 1928. The exhibition intervention, consisting of an architectural model and a series of video animations, will be accompanied by a sound installation created from the geographical coordinates of the church.

Mutabilia seeks to observe the invisible traces of the past and to interrogate the future, imagining the many possibilities between reality and hypothesis, between what has been and what will be. According to the designer, Marguerite Yourcenar herself, in giving voice to Emperor Hadrian, reflects on the dynamism of the city, shaped by cycles that follow one another.

“A phenomenon of which the Church of Santa Rita da Cascia is a paradigm,” Tedone comments, “given its migration from Piazza d’Aracoeli to Via Montanara; an episode of which no trace remains today, except for a plaque affixed to the entrance of the Hall.”
