No one excluded: in Milan, Christian Tasso's exhibition photographs diversity and inclusion

Through May 28, Milan's Fabbrica del Vapore hosts NO ONE EXCLUDED, an exhibition by young photographer Christian Tasso that celebrates diversity and inclusion.

On May 5, NUNO ESCLUSO, Christian Tasso’s exhibition, curated by Adelina von Fürstenberg and produced by ART for The World,(www.artfortheworld.net) opened in Milan at the Fabbrica del Vapore - Sala delle Colonne, where the artist brings out, through his photographs, the stories, situations and aspirations of people with disabilities in various parts of the world. The images do not highlight their “diversity,” but the strong contribution their inclusion brings to society.

Christian Tasso (Macerata, 1986), who lives and works betweenItaly and Switzerland, is an artist and filmmaker, winner of international awards. He develops medium- and long-term projects on themes such as community, customs and rituals, the search for identity through and with others, the interaction between humanity and nature, and the relationship between memory and territory. The sharing of experiences, curiosity about humankind, the search for the relationship between memory and territory, and the connection with nature are the hallmarks of Badger

With NO ONE EXCLUDED, the artist presents a series of large- and medium-format photographic works (exclusively in film developed manually in a darkroom) that celebrate diversity as a resource for all humankind. With this specific work, Christian Tasso wanted to be inspired by situations and people in different parts of the world (Italy, Ecuador, Romania, Nepal, Germany, Albania, Cuba, Mongolia, India, Ireland, Switzerland, Kenya, Cambodia, Paraguay and Ethiopia) who embrace “diversity” as a resource integrated into the social context in which they live. Presenting excerpts of the lives of people with disabilities to the public, the exhibition NO ONE EXCLUDED is a tool for meeting and approaching inclusion. Each image taken by Christian Tasso reflects on the personal story of the subject photographed first and foremost as an individual with his own history and personal ambitions: disability thus becomes one element among many that make up his identity. The photographic series seeks to free the viewer’s gaze from views based on misinformation and today’s controversial ideas regarding people with disabilities. In contrast to the extreme photographs of the great American photographer Diane Arbus (New York, 1923 - 1971) on the world of diversity, Tasso brings to light the sensitive and human aspect of the subjects she photographs, letting us discover their daily lives, their work, the pleasure of being with their families, and the pleasure of life.

NO ONE EXCLUDED is an ART for The World production, an NGO associated with theUNDPI of the United Nations, which draws inspiration from Article 27 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and which proclaims, “Everyone has the right freely to take part in the cultural life of the community, to enjoy the arts and to share in scientific progress and its benefits.” The initiatives promoted by ART for The World are linked together by the dissemination of contemporary culture and the defense of universal values.

The book with images from the exhibition, published by Contrasto can be viewed at the exhibition and purchased on the publisher’s eshop(www.contrastobooks.com).
