Palermo: Antonino Leto. Between the lepopea of the Florios and the light of Capri.

The Palermo Gallery of Modern Art pays tribute to Sicilian artist Antonino Leto with an exhibition tracing his artistic activity.

The Palermo Gallery of Modern Art pays tribute to Antonino Leto (Monreale 1844 - Capri 1913), a leading artist at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries of painting in Sicily.

The exhibition, entitled"Antonino Leto. Tra l’epopea dei Florio e la luce di Capri," is open to the public from October 13, 2018, to February 10, 2019, and aims, through about 100 works, to retrace Leto’s artistic journey: from his training in Naples, where he was attracted by the painting of Giuseppe De Nittis, to his stays in Rome, Florence, where he collaborated with the Pisani Gallery, and Paris. In the French capital he established himself on the international market by depicting mainly scenes of Parisian life.

The exhibition will highlight the relationship between Leto and the Florio family, among his major patrons.

It will also reconstruct part of the production presented at the Venice Biennials, those of 1910 and 1924, which consecrated him internationally. The landscapes with views of Capri belong to this period, and one of the artist’s masterpieces, Behind the Little Marina on Capri, will be presented for the first time.

The exhibition is curated by Luisa Martorelli and Antonella Purpura and is sponsored by the Municipality of Palermo - Department of Culture, the Gallery of Modern Art E. Restivo, on the occasion of Palermo Capital of Culture 2018.
