Paolo Roversi's fashion photographs on display at the MAR in Ravenna

The MAR - Art Museum of the City of Ravenna presents from October 10, 2020 to January 10, 2021 the exhibition Paolo Roversi - Studio Luce.

The exhibition Paolo Roversi - Studio Luce, curated by Chiara Bardelli Nonino, with set designs by Jean-Hugues de Chatillon, opens today and can be visited until January 10, 2021, at the MAR - City Art Museum of Ravenna. Produced by the City of Ravenna, Department of Culture and MAR, with the contribution of Christian Dior Couture, Dauphin and Pirelli, the exhibition aims to be a unique opportunity to discover and learn about the production of the famous photographer from Ravenna, who has been living in France since 1973.

The installation extends across the MAR’s three exhibition floors.

The exhibition path begins with early fashion photographs and a series of portraits of friends and artists, such as Robert Frank and Peter Lindbergh, which alternate with still lives of stools gathered in the street and images depicting the Deardorff, the camera Roversi has always used. Also featured will be some more recent work, from shots for the 2020 Pirelli Calendar to never-before-seen fashion images stemming from decades of work for brands such as Dior and Comme des Garçons and for magazines such as Vogue Italia.

To celebrate the 700th anniversary of Dante’s death, Roversi also presents a wide selection of shots intended to refer to the figure of the muse: a contemporary reinterpretation of the Divine Comedy’s Beatrice, embodied in these shots exhibited by iconic women such as Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Natalia Vodianova and Rihanna.

Born in Ravenna in 1947, Paolo Roversi moved to Paris in 1973, where he still lives and works in his studio on Rue Paul Fort, or Studio Luce, which gives the exhibition its title. His photographic research often refers back to his hometown, to the glitter of the mosaics of Sant’Apollinare, San Vitale and Galla Placidia. With the exception of rare occasions, the photographer works in the studio, a space that for him has a dual connotation: a physical place, an essential theater where he stages his dreams, and a place of the mind, almost a kind of ritual context that opens to an alternative dimension, whose key is always light.
