Rome, MAXXI dedicates an exhibition to Bob Dylan (who is also a painter and sculptor)

From Dec. 16, 2022 to April 30, 2023, MAXXI in Rome is dedicating an exhibition to Bob Dylan, who also dabbles as a painter: the show, titled "Bob Dylan: Retrospectrum," displays 100 works including paintings, watercolors, drawings, sculptures and videos.

From December 16, 2022 to April 30, 2023, MAXXI National Museum of 21st Century Arts in Rome is dedicating an exhibition to Bob Dylan, one of the world’s most highly regarded singer-songwriters, 2016 Nobel Laureate in Literature, and winner of an Academy Award (best song, in 2001), a Pulitzer Prize (in 2008), and numerous Grammy Awards. Bob Dylan: Retrospectrum, this is the title of the exhibition, is an exhibition that brings together the visual artworks of one of the most important icons of contemporary world culture.

After being at the MAM in Shanghai and the Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum in Miami, the exhibition, curated by Shai Baitel, lands in Rome, its first European stop, in a version completely redesigned to interact with the dynamic and futuristic spaces of Zaha Hadid’s MAXXI. On display are more than 100 works including paintings, watercolors, ink and graphite drawings, metal sculptures, and video material, exploring more than 60 years of Bob Dylan’s creative activity.

Says Bob Dylan himself, “It is very gratifying to know that my visual works will be exhibited at MAXXI, in Rome-a very special museum in one of the most beautiful and inspiring cities in the world. This exhibition is meant to offer different points of view that examine the human condition and explore those mysteries of life that continue to perplex us. It is very different from my music, of course, but it has the same intent.”

Comments Giovanna Melandri, President Fondazione MAXXI "Musician, composer, poet, Nobel laureate in literature. Bob Dylan is an absolute myth, one of the most important cultural icons of our time. With this exhibition, we will have the privilege of discovering a previously unseen aspect of his inexhaustible talent: his paintings, like his songs, are powerful, sincere, immediate, evoking paths and suggestions on the road . Dylan is a piece of our history and a part of us, That’s why I am particularly pleased with this exhibition at MAXXI that tells his story in its entirety and tells us."

Adds curator Shai Baitel: "Spanning Bob Dylan’s entire career, this exhibition showcases his unique approach to visual art and his mastery of painting, drawing and sculpture. It offers a unique opportunity to see Dylan’s creative journey through time and place, including the Spanish Steps, immortalized in When I Paint My Masterpiece."
