From June 5 to June 29, 2025, Sanremo ’s Forte Santa Tecla will host an extensive tribute to Lelio Luttazzi (Trieste, 1923 - Trieste, 2010), with an exhibition and musical event entirely dedicated to the figure of the artist from Trieste. Promoted by the Lelio Luttazzi Foundation and included as part of the fourth edition of Swing Corner of the Fortress, the event will offer an exhibition full of original materials and musical appointments celebrating the fundamental contribution of the pianist, composer, actor, presenter and writer to twentieth-century Italian culture. The exhibition, titled LELIOSWING - The Music and Style of Lelio Luttazzi, curated by the Foundation named after him, is an opportunity to explore Luttazzi’s musical work and his eclectic and refined style. Within the exhibition will be original sheet music and manuscripts, period photographs, rare films, drawings, caricatures and newspaper articles that tell the story of his cultural and media influence. There will be no shortage of objects related to the world of show business, including illuminated signs and some clothes that belonged to the artist, elements that combine to delineate an intimate and complete portrait of a figure who knew how to combine irony, lightness and depth.
“Lelio, emperor of understatement, used to screen himself if he was told that he was good, that his songs were formidable, that he had a crazy swing, that he had a grace, a class that wasn’t around. Nor were they ever seen again after that,” Mina claims, capturing the essence of Lelio Luttazzi.
Luttazzi was one of the most original and recognizable interpreters of Italian swing. With his elegant pianism, refined irony and ability to adapt to the languages of radio, television and theater entertainment, he was able to cross the century interpreting the social and cultural changes of his time with grace and intelligence. The exhibition highlights his creative approach and personal style, two traits that made him a reference point for Italian pop music. The materials on display also include visual and textual evidence showing the variety of roles Luttazzi played throughout his career: musician, conductor, actor, showman, book author and TV show host. A long and complex career, always conducted with an independent spirit and a recognizable stylistic signature. Alongside the exhibition display, the cultural programming of the event includes four musical events and a conference, all of which will take place in June inside or on the terraces of the Bastions of Fort Santa Tecla. The first event on the calendar is scheduled for Saturday, June 7, at 5 p.m., with the concert Tribute to Louis Armstrong by the Fabrizio Cattaneo Quartet. A reinterpretation in a jazz key of the repertoire of the famous American trumpeter and singer, a central figure in the birth and development of modern jazz, of whom Luttazzi himself was a great admirer. The second event will be held on Thursday, June 12, at 5 p.m. and will be devoted to the presentation of issue 53 of The Mellophonium magazine. The meeting will be attended by Romano Lupi, editor in chief of the magazine. The heart of the event will be the evening of June 21, coinciding with Music Day 2025. Starting at 9 p.m., the Terraces of the Bastions will host the concert Festa della Musica per Lelio Luttazzi, performed by Freddy Colt and His Swing Kids. The band will bring to the stage the best-known tunes from Luttazzi’s repertoire, reviving the atmosphere of his shows and offering the audience an opportunity to rediscover songs that have become part of Italy’s collective musical heritage. The series of events will conclude on Saturday, June 28 at 6 p.m. with Un’estate standard, a concert dedicated to Bruno Martino on the centenary of his birth. Protagonists of the evening will be Alessandro Bellati and the Livio Zanellato Quartet, engaged in a tribute to one of the leading interpreters of Italian jazz song. Martino, known for hits such as Estate, shared with Luttazzi the ability to blend the Italian melodic tradition with the elegance of American jazz. The concert will represent a further piece in the narrative of the musical legacy of a generation of artists who have been able to dialogue with international languages while maintaining a personal and recognizable expressive figure. All concerts provide admission according to rates, while access to the conference is free of charge subject to availability.
The exhibition will be open on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., and on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. In the evening hours, it will be open on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 5:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. and on Fridays from 5:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. (in addition to 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.).
