Shit photos: Oliviero Toscani's shots of excrement on display in Milan

From Feb. 21 to March 24, 2024, the Ex Scalo Ferroviario in Milan is hosting the exhibition "Cacas," which displays for the first time Oliviero Toscani's photographs dedicated to poop, excrement. In short: photos of shit!

Shitty photos, in the literal sense of the word: these are the ones that Oliviero Toscani has dedicated to poop and are being exhibited in Milan, Galleria Lampo at theEx Scalo Ferroviario Farini on Via Valtellina 5, from February 21 to March 24, 2024. These are a series of works that the photographer made in 1998 for COLORS magazine: they have never been exhibited before. They are large-format photographs depicting not only human excrement, but also that of animals from different parts of the world: chimpanzees, cows, giraffes, hyenas, pigs, lions, ducks, goldfish, pythons, buffaloes, tigers, crickets and many others. A total of 18 photographs are on display.

The exhibition is titled CACAS - All that glitters is not gold, is curated by Nicolas Ballario, a longtime Toscani collaborator, and the reference is to the well-known proverb that warns against appearances. Toscani reverses this fear and uses these words in a positive way, showing that art can make anything fascinating, even feces, which, through his photographs, almost comes to shine. “Poop,” says Toscani, “is the only thing that the human being does without copying others, there is nothing more personal and every time it is a work of art,” said Oliviero Toscani. An unusual exhibition, therefore, that deals with a topic that is still taboo but present in everyone’s life. The idea is to tell “the story and the life cycle of every living being, presenting in an elegant way, through art and photography, something that is not elegant.”

The exhibition, which is open to the public free of charge, is promoted by Sebach, Italy’s leading company in the rental of mobile sanitary and logistics solutions, which will be present in the exhibition space with a special and entertaining set-up. Sebach’s presence is not accidental, as the link between the company and Oliviero Toscani goes back a long way. In fact, in 2006, the artist curated the restyling of the Sebach brand, introducing the iconic inverted red heart, which has now become part of the collective imagination and marked a turning point in the company’s communication. This represents a return to the origins for Sebach, which, almost 20 years after that intuition, finds itself once again working closely with Oliviero Toscani.

The exhibition opens Wednesday through Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays closed.
