Start of the eighth Beaufort Triennial on the Flemish coast.

From March 27 through November 3, 2024, the Beaufort Triennial returns to the Flemish coast. Eighteen Belgian and international artists have been invited for this 2024 edition, the eighth of the event.

From March 27 through Nov. 3, 2024, the Beaufort Triennial, now in its eighth year, returns to the Flemish coast. Curated by Els Wuyts, Beaufort24 ’s theme is The Fabric of Life, a journey through the currents of existence, weaving lines, directions and patterns into a unique marriage of art and landscape. Eighteen Belgian and international artists were invited to create eighteen works, two in each participating coastal city (De Panne, Koksijde, Neuwpoort, Middelkerke, Ostend, Bredene, De Haan, Blankenberge, Zeebrugge, Knokke-Heist). "The theme of this Triennial is Fabric of Life," says Els Wuyts. “A metaphor for a natural connection, an interweaving of different lines, directions and patterns. A starting point from which we can reexamine our local environment and connect it to possible images.”

Each artwork tells a story. From age-old legends to tales of historical events, Beaufort24 aims to offer a journey through the history and culture of these places. At the end of the edition, eight installations will become a permanent part of the Beaufort Sculpture Park, growing to fifty works in all.

“Different locations in different coastal cities are ideal for displaying certain narratives. They offer opportunities to speak to sometimes invisible legends, to find traces of certain historical events, or to highlight issues of concern to us. Just as more than one narrative can be incorporated into a great monument or intimate work of art, multifaceted opinions or values can emerge to be discovered,” said Wuyts. “The exhibition,” he continued, “is accessible and has a significant impact on existing conceptions, memories and thought processes. The sculptures and installations have moved slightly further inland, along the coastal tramway line that connects port areas, village centers, markets, dams, icamps and parks. The exhibition takes you to an intersection, an undulating dune, a quiet area or a simple traffic circle, a lighthouse or a waterfront. Beaufort24 stirs emotions, responding to all life along the Belgian coast while having the ability to reach universal agreements. They are visual invitations to inspiring encounters and possible worlds.”

The Province of West Flanders is supporting this art project again this year. “Beaufort24 is the eighth Triennial, and it always manages to attract thousands of people to the coast from both Flanders and abroad. This allows Westtoer to present the coast internationally as a contemporary destination, where nature, gastronomy and contemporary visual arts play an important role,” said Sabien Lahaye-Battheu, president of Westtoer and provincial delegate for tourism in West Flanders. “From the many inquiries we have received, it is clear that there is already tremendous interest in this Triennial. The added value of a large public event like the Beaufort Triennial is extremely beneficial for the entire coastal region.”

Bicycle and pedestrian routes have been specially laid out to visit Beaufort24, allowing visitors to fully immerse themselves in the art along the coast, reaching both the new installations and those already part of the Beaufort Sculpture Park. A coastal streetcar is also available that runs all 67 kilometers along the coast: thanks to the many stops in all the coastal towns and by following the routes suggested on the Beaufort24 website and in the official event guide, you can easily walk to each installation.
