The good century of Sienese painting: an exhibition tour in the province of Siena


From March 18 to June 30, 2017, the cities of Montepulciano, San Quirico d'Orcia and Pienza will host the exhibition "The Good Century of Sienese Painting."

An exhibition spread over three cities in the province of Siena and inspired by the definition that art historian Luigi Lanzi gave to indicate the period between the 16th and mid-17th centuries of Sienese painting: The Good Century of Sienese Painting.

From March 18 to June 30, 2017, Montepulciano, San Quirico d’Orcia and Pienza invite visitors to learn about and explore important Sienese artists and their cultural milieu, starting with masterpieces already present in their area. Works from public and private collections and churches that allow visitors to discover the land of Siena.

Each of the above three cities dedicates an exhibition itinerary to a different section:
in Montepulciano the art of Domenico Beccafumi, starting with the discovery of the Sant’Agnese Segni made by the artist and preserved at the Museo Civico Pinacoteca Crociani;
in San Quirico d’Orcia, starting with the Madonna and Child with Saints Leonard and Sebastian by Bartolomeo Neroni known as il Riccio, a journey through Sienese painting from Sodoma to Riccio;
in Pienza, from the presence of Francesco Rustici ’s altarpiece depicting the Madonna and Child with Saints Charles Borromeo, Francis, Clare, Catherine and John the Baptist, the art of Francesco Rustici is analyzed.

An exhibition created by the will of territorial institutions in order to entice visitors to get to know the treasures of this World Heritage area.

The curators are Alessandro Angelini, Roberto Longi, Marco Ciampolini, Roggero Roggeri,Gabriele Fattorini, and Laura Martini, chaired by Antonio Paolucci.
