Through January 23, 2023, the Musée Jacquemart-André in Paris is hosting the exhibition Füssli, Between Dream and Fantasy dedicated to the Swiss-born British painter Johann Heinrich Füssli.
The exhibition displays some 60 works from public and private collections, exploring the most significant themes in Füssli’s oeuvre. From Shakespearean subjects to depictions of dreams, nightmares and apparitions, through mythological and biblical illustrations, the artist oscillates with his art between dream and fantasy. He began his artistic career quite late, during an early trip to London, under the influence of Sir Joshua Reynolds, president of the Royal Academy. After a long stay in Italy, during which he was particularly fascinated by the art of Michelangelo, he returned to settle in London in the late 1770s. Füssli drew inspiration from literary works and passed them through the filter of his imagination. He develops in his painting a dreamlike and dramatic language, where the marvelous and the fantastic, the sublime and the grotesque constantly meet.
The current one at the Musée Jacquemart-André is the first monographic exhibition devoted to Füssli to be held in Paris since 1975, and it is rare to find paintings by this celebrated artist in French collections. The public thus has the opportunity to admire mythological and biblical stories, depictions related to Shakespearean theater, particularly Macbeth, the themes of nightmare, dream and apparitions, but also the female figure in his graphic work.
