The liberation of Bologna from the Austrians in an exhibition at the Museum of the Risorgimento in the capital of Emilia Romagna

From May 18 to July 14, 2019, the Museo del Risorgimento in Bologna is hosting the exhibition 'Bologna from that moment was free.

On June 12, 1859 (just 160 years ago) following the defeats suffered at Palestro and Magenta by French-Piedmontese troops, the Austrian troops in Bologna supporting the faltering papal government had to evacuate the city as well. Within a few months, in a rapid succession of events, the entire Emilia-Romagna region would join the constitutional monarchy of Victor Emmanuel II, the future King of Italy. Thus was fulfilled for Bologna the process of national unification that had begun several decades earlier, and which in the battle of August 8, 1848 found its most important episode.

The exhibition Bologna was free from that moment. Episodes, Aspects and Memory of June 12, 1859, running from May 18 to July 14, 2019 at the Museum of the Risorgimento in Bologna, traces episodes and aspects of that period through the display of memorabilia and original documents that are not normally visible to the public: the battle of August 8, the dominance of the Austrians over the city in the decade 1849-1859, the day of June 12 and the rapid succession of provisional governments, the formation of an army and the National Guard, and the celebratory memory of June 12 in the following decades. With a smarthphone and thanks to a QR code in the different showcases, it will be possible to access the portal www.storiaememoriadibologna.it, which will contain news and insights related to the different exhibits, so as to fully appreciate their history and significance.
