Turin, Sabauda Gallery celebrates Guido Reni and the Savoy court's admiration for the painter

On the occasion of the 450th anniversary of his birth, the Spazio Scoperte of the Galleria Sabauda in Turin will host the exhibition "The 'Divine' Guido Reni in the Savoy Collections and on the Altars of Piedmont."

From October 11, 2025 to January 18, 2026, the Spazio Scoperte on the second floor of the Galleria Sabauda in Turin will host the exhibition Il “divino” Guido Reni nelle collezioni sabaude e sugli altari del Piemonte, curated by Annamaria Bava and Sofia Villano.

The exhibition is intended to be a tribute to the celebrated Emilian painter on the occasion of the 450th anniversary of his birth and will recount, through works from the Royal Museums and important loans from the territory and the Musée des Augustins in Toulouse, the admiration of the Savoy court-since the first nuclei of the ducal collections-for Bolognese classicist painting and, in particular, that of Guido Reni.

Reni’s artistic language, marked by composure and luminosity, based on the harmony of forms and the ideal of beauty inspired by ancient sculpture and the great masters of the Renaissance, perfectly matched the Savoy taste for magnificence and elegance in the decoration and furnishing of Savoy residences and court altars.

The first section will be devoted to paintings by Guido Reni, or attributed to him, which entered the ducal collections in the early seventeenth century thanks to Cardinal Maurice ’s predilection for his painting. The second section will present canvases by the Bolognese master belonging to the picture gallery of Prince Eugene of Savoy-Soissons, purchased after his death by Charles Emmanuel III and arrived in Turin in 1741.

A small section will also display fine examples of Reni’sgraphic activity belonging to the collection of the Galleria Sabauda and the collections of the Royal Library.

To conclude the tour, Guido Reni’s youthful canvas depicting theAssumption of the Virgin, recently rediscovered in the parish church of Abbadia Alpina in Pinerolo (Turin) and presented after careful restoration, will be on display.
