In Montalcino, the past meets the present in a new challenge launched by the Fondazione Musei Senesi. With Vis-à-Vis, a project that connects cultural heritage with contemporary visual arts, an initiative that calls on young talents in photography and graphics takes shape. At the center of this edition is the archaeological site of Poggio Civitella, a place of great historical and scenic value located north of the town of Brunello, which becomes the subject of creative exploration for a new generation of artists.
The national call, open until September 4, 2025, is aimed at photographers and graphic designers under 35. It is an opportunity designed to stimulate a dialogue between archaeology and contemporary languages, in continuity with the activities related to the 40th anniversary of “Progetto Etruschi,” the great site of research and valorization launched in Tuscany in the 1980s. The intent is clear: to create a bridge between the historical memory preserved in the site of Poggio Civitella and the new forms of expression capable of recounting it to today’s public.
The competition, entitled The Matter of Time, requires the artist selected for the photographic part to create an original work through a process of direct immersion. Site surveys, study of materials and visual restitution of what the site inspires will be essential. At the same time, the chosen graphic designer will collaborate on the design of a limited edition fanzine, conceived as a tool for storytelling and reflection, capable of transforming archaeology into a practice of listening, caring and storytelling. In this way, the project aims not only to produce works, but also to generate new modes of cultural mediation.
The result of this journey will be presented on Saturday, October 4, at Poggio Civitella. The event will include a photo exhibition and presentation of the fanzine, accompanied by a guided tour of the site by Professor Luigi Donati, former director of the excavation campaign. An opportunity that will allow visitors to observe the archaeological heritage with renewed eyes, through the sensibility of young authors and the power of visual arts.
The call for entries offers selected artists a prize consisting of the production of the fanzine and the exhibition of the photographic works. Full details and how to participate are available online(https://shorturl.at/juhXb). The deadline is 11:59 p.m. on September 4, 2025.
The jury that will evaluate the entries is composed of leading figures in the cultural and photographic scene: photographer and publisher Chinzia Cucini, founder of Giostre Edizioni; Sofia Giuntini, photographer and independent curator; photo editor Teodora Malaventi; Maddalena Sanfilippo, councillor for Culture of the Municipality of Montalcino; and Carolina Taddei, coordinator of Fondazione Musei Senesi. A group that combines artistic, editorial and institutional expertise, ensuring a careful and multidisciplinary look at the selection of participants.
Vis-à-Vis is a project conceived and promoted by Fondazione Musei Senesi with the contribution of the Region of Tuscany, as part of the ToscanaInContemporanea 2025 program. This stage is realized in collaboration with the Municipality of Montalcino, Opera Laboratori and the publishing house Giostre Edizioni. The aim is to renew the relationship with cultural heritage through current languages, while encouraging the protagonism of young artists.
