Pandolfini, auction in Milan with Chagall and Jago's unpublished Heart No. 20

On May 13 in Milan, Pandolfini auction house offers a selection of modern and contemporary art from private collections. The catalog features works by Chagall, Dali, Donghi, Guttuso and, for the first time on the market, Jago's sculpture Heart n20.

In Milan’s Via Manzoni spaces, Pandolfini auction house presents an auction on May 13 dedicated tomodern and contemporary art that brings together works from private collections and largely unseen on the market. The catalog traverses the international and Italian 20th century up to the most recent expressions, with a selection that includes paintings, works on paper and sculptures.

Among the most prominent lots is Amoreux avec fleurs et nature morte from 1950 by Marc Chagall, estimated at between 150,000 and 250,000 euros. The work comes from the collection of writer Arkady Leokum, the artist’s neighbor in Vence, and features a double signature. Stylistically, the painting is in a particularly lyrical phase of Chagall’s production, characterized by a free construction of forms and a centrality of color. The composition, centered on two lovers, returns some of the recurring themes in the artist’s poetics, including love, memory and the dimension of rebirth.

The catalog also devotes space to Italian masters of the 20th century. Among them, Antonio Donghi’s Trattoria, dated 1930 and estimated at between 40,000 and 60,000 euros, represents one of the most remarkable achievements of the artist’s maturity. The work was presented at the 18th Venice Biennale Exhibition and is accompanied by a documented exhibition and bibliographical history. The seemingly simple scene instead introduces a subtle tension.

Also of special interest is Giacomo Balla’s Portrait of the Marchesa de Nobili, executed in 1910, shortly before the artist joined Futurism. Estimated between 30,000 and 50,000 euros, the painting testifies to a stage of full maturity in the field of portraiture. Also among the Italian names, Antonio Ligabue appears with Cat with Interior and Window, estimated between 80,000 and 150,000 euros, and Renato Guttuso with Courtyard of Rome, an oil on canvas from 1957 estimated between 40,000 and 60,000 euros, in which urban space is restored as a dimension of everyday life.

Completing the twentieth-century nucleus are works by Felice Casorati, Giorgio De Chirico and Anastasio Soldati. On the international side, the catalog includes the painting Südliche Landschaft am Meer by Konstantin A. Korovin, estimated between 45,000 and 90,000 euros and made during his stay in the Crimea, in Gurzuf, as well as an ink on paper by Salvador Dali, Untitled/Figura femenina, with an estimate between 20,000 and 30,000 euros.

For the second half of the 20th century, there are works by Lucio Fontana, Maria Lai and Salvo, along with a representation of the so-called Roman school, with works by Mario Schifano, Franco Angeli, Cesare Tacchi, Giosetta Fioroni, Jannis Kounellis, Tano Festa and PinoPascali.

Special attention is devoted to sculpture, with works by Man Ray, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Mauro Staccioli and Paolo Icaro. Of note in this area is the presence, for the first time on the market, of Cuore n20 by Jago, pseudonym of Jacopo Cardillo. The sculpture, in glazed ceramic, is estimated between 25,000 and 40,000 euros and belongs to the series Apparato Circolatorio, composed of thirty hearts conceived as as many moments of pulsation. The work has already been presented in several international exhibitions. Closing the catalog is a selection of ultra-contemporary works, with works by Marlene Dumas, Chantal Joffe, Josh Smith, Mary Obering, and Ayesha Sultana, testifying to a proposal that extends to the most recent research.
