Sotheby's, auctioning a $40 million Monet: among the best results of his Water Lilies

Going up for auction on May 12 at Sotheby's is one of the finest renditions of Monet's Water Lilies. The painting is estimated at $40 million to $60 million.

On May 12, during an evening auction devoted to Impressionist and modern art, a large three-foot by two-foot painting by Claude Monet that has been estimated at $40 million to $60 million will be offered for sale at Sotheby ’s.

It is Le Bassin aux nymphéas made by the celebrated<a href=“/art-base/claude-monet-life-opere-father-impressionism” target=“_blank”>artist father ofImpressionism between 1917 and 1919. The signed painting references one of Monet’s favorite themes, water lilies, and probably depicts the lily pond at his Giverny residence.

One can see here almost an abstract rendering of the surface of the water and its reflections, with bright brushstrokes representing the splendid colors of the flowers; yellow, red, pink, green all combine in a pictorial creation of the highest order. It is among the best outcomes of this theme.

Before going to auction in New York, the painting will be exhibited from April 26 in Taipei.

The record figure achieved by a Monet is $110 million: it was reached by The Haystacks in 2019.
