Brera, Palazzo Citterio to open in late 2022. Green light for Bradburne's project

Green light for James Bradburne's exhibition design: Palazzo Citterio will open to the public in late 2022. "It is the project that Milan has been waiting for for almost fifty years."

Fifty years after its acquisition, Palazzo Citterio will open to the public at the end of 2022. The technical-scientific committees involved by the Direzione Generale Belle Arti e Paesaggio have approved and given the green light to the project for the arrangement of the modern collections and the construction of the new staircase of the Palazzo. The project had been presented more than two years ago by Brera Art Gallery and Braidense Library director James Bradburne and his team. “The year 2021 begins with good news,” Bradburne told ANSA with satisfaction. "The letter arrived in the late afternoon of December 30, as if it were the perfect start to the new year. Now we can complete the project that Milan has been waiting for almost fifty years." The Palazzo had been acquired by the state in 1972 to become an additional home for the Pinacoteca, and it was the then superintendent Franco Russoli who conceived the Grande Brera project, envisioning the expansion of the Pinacoteca to the Palazzo Citterio site. Restorations of the latter had been completed in April 2018, after more than 40 troubled years, in order to house Brera’s modern and contemponea art collections, making it part of the Grande Brera itinerary.

Among the changes proposed in Bradburne’s new project is the Russolian Corridor, in homage to former superintendent Franco Russoli, which would unite the two venues, the Pinacoteca and Palazzo Citterio, through a glass and steel walkway suspended over the Botanical Garden. A project presented by architectural firm Front Inc. And the construction of a monumental glass staircase to transform the entrance into a solemn atrium.

The scientific project that underlies the new layout aims to celebrate and respect the specificities of the three historical collections: the Jesi, Vitali and Mattioli collections, ce will be housed in the rooms of the Palace.
