Faragola tries to rise again after devastating fire. With solidarity tours in four regions

After the fire that devastated it in 2017, the archaeological site of Faragola is trying to get back on its feet with solidarity tours available in four regions.

In September last year, the archaeological site of the Villa of Faragola in Ascoli Satriano (Foggia) was devastated by a large fire, the nature of which is assumed to be arson. The fire caused significant damage to the Villa, which had been the subject of extensive archaeological investigations since 2003 and was opened to the public in 2009.

Now, an initiative wants to try to restore the site. It is SaveFaragola: a summer marathon of solidarity guided tours (currently available in four Italian regions) and special events, with professonist guides, from August 16 to September 30, 2018: the goal, to raise funds to be allocated to the archaeological site of Faragola. But that’s not all: SaveFaragola also intends to keep the spotlight on the dramatic fire through scientific outreach and public awareness, as well as to enhance the figure of the cultural professional who brings his or her skills to bear in favor of the enhancement of a cultural asset in need of prompt recovery.

To support Faragola it is necessary to go to the portal iloveguido.it, on the page dedicated to the SaveFaragola project, choose one of the available tours (for now present, as anticipated, in four regions: Puglia, Lazio, Campania and Tuscany) and make a reservation: the participation fee will help the Apulia Felix Foundation recover the archaeological site of Faragola. Those who cannot participate in the tours also have the opportunity to give one as a gift to a friend, again by going to the same link.

SaveFaragola is a project supported by The Monuments People association and Guido Tour Sharing. Association of Social Promotion (APS) The Monuments People was born from the idea of four tour guides licensed with the Region of Puglia with the aim of having a tool to work together in the field of promotion, enhancement and especially the enjoyment of cultural and environmental heritage. The choice of name recalls a famous cinematic masterpiece, The Monuments Men. It refers to all those men and women who during and after World War II managed to find and safeguard countless masterpieces of our art history, with the idea of involving everyone: professionals in the field on the one hand, “users” on the other for a proper process of dissemination and thus enjoyment of cultural heritage, trying to spread to as many “people” as possible the knowledge of our heritage. Guido tour sharing was founded in 2015 as a spin off for the experimentation of collaborative practices to foster a more inclusive tourism. In 2017 it was established as a Social Enterprise thanks also to the support of Fondazione Cariplo. The goal is to use new technologies to enhance the cultural heritage of a city through live mediation and integration between residents and individual tourists.
