The museum route of Ferrara’s Estense Castle will remain fully accessible until January 11, 2026. This is a significant choice, an expression of the joint commitment of the Municipality and the Province of Ferrara to continue with the enhancement of the city’s main symbol, to the benefit of tourism promotion and support for the local economy, involving tour guides, accommodations, restaurants and services.
The Estense Castle will therefore continue to welcome visitors in its entirety in the coming months. The organization of the fireworks display of the fire of the Estense Castle, planned as per tradition for the New Year’s Eve celebrations in Ferrara, whose preparations are already underway, has also been confirmed.
In parallel, a strategy is being developed to strengthen the promotion of other places of historical and cultural interest in the city, with the aim of better distributing tourist flows and enhancing the entire urban cultural heritage. The main examples of this offer include Palazzo dei Diamanti with its temporary exhibitions, the Schifanoia Museum, and the Spazio Antonioni dedicated to Academy Award-winning director Michelangelo Antonioni. The grand reopening of Museo Boldini and the entire museum complex housed in Palazzo Massari, closed after the earthquake that struck Ferrara and Emilia in 2012, is planned for 2026.
In any case, the City and Province are actively collaborating to ensure that, even during future construction work, the Castello Estense will continue to be a visible and central landmark in the city’s cultural and tourist life.
“Taking into account the 46 applications that have arrived for the restoration work on the Castello Estense,” said Province President Daniele Garuti, “and in view of the technical time required to screen such an important number of proposals, we have gladly shared with the Municipality of Ferrara a path to make Ferrara’s symbolic monument usable for as long as possible, to the benefit of our receptive system.”
“Ferrara looks to the future with an integrated vision of culture and tourism, in which the Castle is the engine, but not the only fulcrum of a broad, rich and attractive narrative. Given the technical timeframe related to the European tender procedure initiated by the Province of Ferrara - owner of the building - for the awarding of the restoration, renovation and seismic adaptation works of the Castle, and the high number of participating economic operators, the actual start of the construction site is expected to take place no earlier than the beginning of 2026. This makes it possible to extend the full use of the museum spaces, including the Imbarcaderi and Sala Alfonso I, thanks to an extension of the agreement between the Municipality and the Province that is currently being approved,” explained Ferrara Municipality Tourism Councillor Matteo Fornasini.
