Four rare prints by Impressionist artist Mary Cassatt have entered the collections of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.

The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam has acquired four rare prints by Impressionist artist Mary Cassatt into its collections: specifically, three large-format color etchings and one black-and-white lithograph. The works will be on view to the public as soon as the museum reopens its doors.

“We are very pleased to be able to add these important prints to the Van Gogh Museum’s collection after years of research,” said Emilie Gordenker, director general of the Van Gogh Museum. “We are therefore very grateful to the VriendenLoterij, the Mondriaan Fund, the Rembrandt Association and our private supporters at the Yellow House who are fully funding these exceptional acquisitions.”

The four acquisitions are in excellent condition and are considered among the finest graphics produced in the late 19th century. The artist began to devote himself to etching around 1879. The Letter, At the Theater, The Toilet, The Rehearsal-these are the titles of the four prints-are from The Ten series, inspired by the Japanese woodcuts exhibited in Paris, with the exception of At the Theater, which is the result of Mary Cassatt’s early experiments (c. 1880) with lithography.

These works depict the daily routine of a middle-class woman, and she worked closely for months with master printmaker Leroy to create them, achieving a truly exquisite result.

“The four prints, which are unmatched in terms of experimentation, technical finesse, stylization, subtlety and intimacy of her subjects, are an important addition to the collection,” commented Fleur Roos Rosa de Carvalho, senior conservator at the museum. “They are extremely rare works.”
