Jessica Morgan will be the new director of the Tate. The announcement was made by the president and the board of directors of the British institution, following the outgoing prime minister, Sir Keir Starmer’s, approval of the appointment. Morgan will take office on January 1, 2027, and will become the tenth director in the Tate’s history, succeeding Maria Balshaw CBE.
A 57-year-old British curator, Morgan has led the Dia Art Foundation in New York since 2015, a multi-site organization that commissions and produces projects and exhibitions, maintains an ever-expanding collection of modern and contemporary art, and manages major site-specific permanent installations in the United States and Germany. During her tenure, the foundation has expanded its activities, increasing free access to its venues, launching renovation projects, and expanding the collection and exhibition program to include artists and works from an international scene.
For Morgan, this marks a return to the Tate, where she had previously worked from 2002 to 2014. From 2010 to 2014, she served as The Daskalopoulos Curator, International Art, at Tate Modern, and for the preceding eight years, she held the position of curator at Tate. During that time, she organized numerous major exhibitions, oversaw new commissions for the Turbine Hall, and contributed to the development of the institution’s international collection. Prior to her time in London, she worked as chief curator at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston and as a curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.
In recent years, Morgan has also curated the retrospective dedicated to Lee Ufan at the SMAC in Venice in 2026 and the group exhibition *Minimal* at the Bourse de Commerce in Paris, staged between 2025 and 2026. In 2014, she served as artistic director of the 10th Gwangju Biennale, and today she serves on several international advisory boards, including those of the Haus der Kunst in Munich, the MACBA in Barcelona, the Khao Yai Foundation in Thailand, and the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre in Mumbai.
The new director holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in art history from the University of Cambridge and earned a master’s degree from the Courtauld Institute of Art. She was also a Mellon Fellow at the Yale Center for British Art at Yale University and a Contemporary Art Curatorial Fellow at the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University.
Morgan will take the helm of one of the leading museum institutions dedicated to the visual arts, which includes Tate Modern, Tate Britain, Tate Liverpool, and Tate St Ives. Each year, the Tate welcomes millions of visitors, loans thousands of works from its collection to British and international museums, and has over 160,000 members and approximately 190,000 young people enrolled in the Tate Collective program. Her appointment will also coincide with a particularly significant phase for the institution, which will see the reopening of Tate Liverpool in 2027 following a major transformation project. Until Morgan takes office, Karin Hindsbo, deputy director of the Tate and director of Tate Modern, will continue to serve as interim director.
