“Italian Museums,” theofficial app of the National Museum System, was presented this morning at the Ministry of Culture. This app, in connection with the museiitaliani.it platform, allows users to inform themselves, explore and purchase tickets for state-owned cultural venues throughout Italy. The initiative, part of the PNRR-funded “Ad Arte” project, aims to improve the physical, cognitive and sense-perceptual accessibility of Italy’s cultural heritage.
The application, which had long been available to visitors but had not yet received its official “investiture,” is celebrating its first anniversary since release these days, marking a symbolic moment to reflect on achievements and future prospects. During the presentation, the Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, and the Director General of Museums, Massimo Osanna, outlined the progress and benefits derived from the use of the platform and app.
Promoted by the Ministry of Culture and developed by the Directorate General for Museums with funds from the PNRR, the “Italian Museums” app is distinguished by its recognizable logo and blue background, the symbol of the Ministry of Culture. Available for free in major stores, the app, together with the web platform, offers a service covering more than 400 state institutions. Users can explore cultural heritage, obtain up-to-date official information, and securely purchase admission tickets.
Ticketing management is facilitated for 130 of these more than 400 institutions through a direct management system, which eliminates brokerage costs and integrates physical checkout systems and digital totems. This has enabled the sale of more than 3 million tickets, generatingmore than 11 million euros in revenue, supporting the country’s digital transformation and providing economic benefits for the administration and visitors. The app is a tool that therefore facilitates the purchase of tickets, either directly in the e-ticketing platform Italian Museums, or by leading the user to the other specific official sales channels that may be provided by individual museums.
The project to reorganize the digital ecosystem of Italian museums includes several integrated tools intended for both the public and the museums involved. In addition to the Musei Italiani app, in fact, the system consists of the website museiitaliani.it (it functions as the app’s web interface, providing detailed cultural information and enabling online ticket purchase, plus it also serves as a network tool for the accreditation of museums to the National Museum System according to common quality standards), the backoffice portal (it supports museums in the management ofe-ticketing, content and services, improving operational efficiency and integration with the digital system), the logo (composed ofa tricolor braid on a blue background, it represents the network of connections and interconnections of Italian museums), the “Italian Museums” social channels (maintain contact with visitors, communicating events, news and useful information).
“The Musei italiani app, which is one of the first concrete results of the PNRR, marks a great achievement for the National Museum System,” comments Director General Musei Massimo Osanna, “which has thus equipped itself with an official, intuitive and complete interface designed to make our cultural heritage increasingly accessible. Already in its first months of operation, Italian Museums has established itself as a point of reference for all citizens and visitors interested in discovering Italy’s cultural sites. The innovative e-ticketing system has also made it possible to overcome the age-old administrative, economic and logistical obstacles that lesser-known or smaller sites - but also some larger realities - encountered in organizing their own comprehensive ticketing system, with a view to an overall and equitable development of the entire museum network in our country. Finally, the app is to be understood as a tool in the making and will soon enter a new phase, welcoming not only museums under MiC’s jurisdiction but also non-state cultural venues, fully realizing the goals of the National Museum System. New features are also being implemented and will soon be available, such as recommended itineraries or audio guides and videoguides that will be able to accompany visitors especially in terms of accessibility and inclusion.”
At the same time as the app, museum attendance figures for 2023 were also presented. 2023, in particular, was an extraordinary year for national museums and archaeological parks, recording a record number of 57,730,502 visitors, the highest ever in the historical series. This represents an increase of 10.7 million visitors over 2022 (+23%) and an increase of 2.4 million over 2018 (+4%). Receipts reached €313.9 million, an increase of nearly 34 percent over 2022 (+€79.3 million) and 30 percent over 2019 (+€71.5 million), hitherto the year of peak attendance, setting a new record even compared to the pre-pandemic period.
The most visited museums in 2023, which saw growth compared to 2022, are: the Colosseum Archaeological Park (12,298,246), the Pantheon (5,169.106: worth noting that it introduced a paid admission ticket from July 2023, recording receipts of 6,024,401), the Uffizi Galleries (5,138,588), the Pompeii Archaeological Park (4,087,164), and the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Florence (2,013,914).
“The extraordinary success of Italian museums,” comments Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano, “shows that we are working in the right direction in the name of valorization as stated in Article 9 of the Constitution. Italian museums have immense historical and identity value, to this we are adding the quality of services, we have ideas and we will do much more. The app represents a further step toward modernization and enhancement. We can offer the world unique experiences thanks to our past and history. Every Italian should be proud of their heritage.”
“The increases noted in 2023 compared not only to the previous year, which was already positive, but also to the attendance records recorded pre-pandemic times,” says Massimo Osanna, “show that our country boasts a National Museum System that is healthy, growing and able to attract audiences, with a rich, inclusive and increasingly accessible cultural offer. These results are due to all the directors and staff of the sites who, in synergy with the Directorate General for Museums, work tirelessly, in a network perspective and in agreement with territorial communities, to preserve and enhance the cultural heritage of our museums.”
