New museum opens today in Umbria: it's the Hannibal Museum at Trasimeno

A new museum opens in Umbria: it is the Museum of Hannibal at Trasimeno, located in Tuoro al Trasimeno (Perugia) and reconstructing the battle between the Romans and Carthaginians.

The town of Tuoro sul Trasimeno is known because one of the most famous battles of antiquity was held here on June 21, 217 BC: the Battle of Trasimeno, which took place in the hills around the lake and pitted the Roman army led by Caius Flaminius against the Carthaginian army under the command of Hannibal. The battle marked a serious defeat for the Romans, and Hannibal was able to continue his march toward southern Italy. To this event, Tuoro sul Trasimeno now dedicates a new multimedia museum.

There are caption panels, interactive multimedia panels, touch screens, illustrative videos, and animations that aim to show the public what happened that day, what the contexts were that led to the clash between the Romans and Carthaginians, how the battle unfolded, and what it meant for Roman society. In all, there are five exhibition environments, and in their entirety the visitor will also be able to familiarize himself with the territory: in fact, there are also planned moments of in-depth study of Lake Trasimeno, its landscape, the demo-ethno-anthropological component and the geological one. Still, also planned is a 4D environment that leads visitors directly into the heart of the battle: this is one of the rare examples of the use of such technology in museums in Italy. The video is 8 minutes long and reconstructs the battle with three-dimensional and multisensory effects.

The museum is set up in the spaces of the Palazzo del Capra, formerly home to the “Giancarlo Susini” Documentation Center, and is the result of a collaboration between the Municipality of Tuoro sul Trasimeno and Space s.p.a., a technological and cultural innovation company, which won the tender for the creation of the exhibit. The inauguration is scheduled for Saturday, June 24, 2017, at 4 p.m., in the presence of Fernanda Cecchini, councillor for culture of the Region of Umbria, Patrizia Cerimonia, mayor of Tuoro sul Trasimeno, and the scientific consultants who took care of the installation (Giovanni Brizzi and Ermanno Gambini), Giorgio Bonamente, professor of Roman history at the University of Perugia, and Francesca Romana Conti, production director of Space s.p.a. The museum has its own website: www.annibalealtrasimeno.it.
