Pompeii, House of Ceres and Maiuri's Horse return to view

From June 14, 2022, the House of Ceres and the skeleton of Maiuri's Horse will return to the Pompeii Archaeological Park after restoration work.

From June 14, 2022, the House of Ceres and the skeleton of Maiuri’s Horse will return to public view at Pompeii Archaeological Park. The House, which owes its name to the terracotta bust of the goddess Ceres, goddess of the earth and fertility, found in one of the rooms open to the atrium, and probably part of the furnishings of a small domestic place of worship, has been the subject of a series of interventions involving the restoration of the decorative apparatus, from mosaic floors to frescoes of the early style, the re-roofing and the restoration of the garden with the cultivation of cereals, barley and soft wheat and other species inspired by the cults of Ceres. The domus has also been the subject of a plan to enhance and improve the visitor route, which includes artistic lighting of the decorative apparatus, the construction of a walkway connecting the atrium and the garden, and the display in vitrines of artifacts found in the house.

Along the same Via di Castricio, on which the mansion overlooks, the public will be able to return to see the skeleton of Maiuri’s Horse: the skeleton of a horse that was found during excavation in an area south of Via dell’Abbondanza by Amedeo Maiuri in 1938; a horse 1.34 meters tall at the withers, used for transporting goods for towing. Maiuri had left the artifacts in situ, putting the horse back up on a metal structure, covered by a canopy, but over the decades it had suffered progressive deterioration, so the Archaeological Park undertook its restoration with plans for a new display aimed at its enhancement. Now it is being re-purposed in a more scientifically correct location, with a new structure and materials, suitable for the microclimate and capable of ensuring the necessary conditions to protect the horse.
