Royal Museums of Turin launches MRT Virtual, a new augmented reality app

The Royal Museums of Turin are launching MRT Virtual, a new augmented reality app: pointing the camera at objects in the collections will reveal additional content. For now available for the Chapel of the Shroud and the Grove of the Royal Gardens.

The Royal Museums of Turin are launching MRT Virtual, a new app with augmented reality created in collaboration with the Council for the Enhancement of the Artistic and Cultural Heritage of Turin, and already downloadable for free from online platforms (Google Play Store for Android and App Store for iOS). It is a digital tool to offer the public new content and experiences within the exhibition itinerary of the Royal Museums, created following the restoration of the altar of the Chapel of the Shroud.

MRT Virtual is based on augmented reality technology, and has been designed as a binder of multimedia content, today focused on detailed knowledge of the Altar, Chapel and Grove of the Royal Gardens, but soon to be enriched with new topics and functions (games are also planned to encourage a gamification-prone approach). The application, developed by Ribes Solutions and VisivaLab, will find its maximum expression through the activation of the camera of one’s device, which, pointed at the areas of interest, will offer the user textual content, videos, photos and animations in augmented reality.

This project is part of the innovation and digital transformation plan GoDigital!, launched last months by the Royal Museums that will lead in the coming years to very important changes for the public and the staff of the Museums themselves. Other technological solutions are, in fact, under development and will be unveiled in early 2022. These include a new website, revised not only in its revamped graphic design but also in the content and services offered, innovative digital signage to orient visitors on their way through the Museums, totems for surveying appreciation and satisfaction, and the implementation of a free WI-FI in the Royal Gardens.

“All this is just the tip of the iceberg of a deeper and lasting change to bring the user to the center of the museums’ action, through a new model of interaction, from an omni-channel perspective,” says Enrica Pagella, Director of the Royal Museums. “The digital transformation and new needs dictated by the health emergency require museums to develop new ways of listening, building an empathic relationship with the public that offers everyone opportunities for trust, well-being and recovery, including through the development of ideas and projects with a high inclusive and participatory content.”

“For 34 years Consulta’s path has been oriented toward cultural and technological innovation,” says Giorgio Marsiaj, President of Consulta per la Valorizzazione Beni Artistici e Culturali di Torino. “The app, which can be downloaded for free, that we are presenting today follows other significant milestones in recent months: the App for visiting Palazzo Madama and the realization of the Egyptian Museum’s high-tech Room of Life, presented last June, and the European S-T-Arts initiative dedicated to the Stupinigi Complex, which has just been concluded. An App dedicated to the MAO-Museum of Oriental Art is in the planning stage. The Consulta’s Member companies believe in the ’Turin’ brand and promote enhancement projects to help build the Turin of the future, with deep respect for the historical-artistic heritage that the past has given us.”
